Summary: this book is a tribute to african american heroes in the west. It uses the stories of specific black individual as well as larger groups, such as the buffalo soldiers to provide a overall view of black life in that time. It covers everything from the life on the frontier as black woman , to black cowboys, buffalo soldiers,and black towns with ample facts and pictures to support the information provided. The author is unbiased and the work serves as a collection of personal narratives rather than evidence provided to support a claim or perspective. The author only seeks to bring awareness to black life in that time but does it without a specific tone or bias to ensure the reader is not alienated from the information.

I believe the source would be more helpful if it provided more information on the impact of politics on the black frontier and the shift away from slavery and into the life as a free man as I believe the source purposely shied away from more controversial narratives and information. It has changed the way I think about black settlement because it exalted back individuals rather than viewing them through the lens of the racists of that time period. It showed me how black people actively sought out these opportunities and worked for what they earned rather than the typical portal of them being handed everything yet still struggling. It gave me information on various types of black individuals and their impact on the frontier which would allow me to find common characteristics in all of their experiences. Through this source I understood how all black individuals shared a particular social, economic, or political effect of the
