Hester Prynne is described a beautiful young woman, as she walks through the crowds of scandalous people. Hester Prynne was a tall young woman, who has “dark and abundant hair, so glossy that it threw off the sunshine with a gleam”(49). Hester is portrayed to have lavishly hair, that even the sun could not compete with her. She was indeed beautiful, almost like the Virgin Mary. Hawthorne says, “Her beauty shone out and made a halo”(49). This shows how Hester Prynne is portrayed as the Virgin Mary, who is pure and virtuous. Her beauty casted a halo on her head. Hawthorne says, “ This woman has brought shame upon us all and ought to die”(47). She is seen as a disgrace to her people. Hawthorne uses words such as, “misfortune” and “ignominy” to also describe Hester Prynne. People feel disgusted, mortified ,and even shameful, when they see her. Master Dimmesdale is looked up to for his intelligence and his devotion of God. He is associated with the phrases as “godly” and “ the speech of an angel”. Master Dimmesdale is passionate for his religious, therefore people look up to him, as a God.
Hester Prynne and Master Dimmesdale are both alike but very different. Hester Prynne is portrayed as the Virgin; beautiful and pure. The irony in that is she punished for committing adultery.
