Hildegard of Bingen was born in 1098 in West Franconia, Germany. She was born into a wealthy family as she was daughter of a knight. She spent her childhood in West Franconia however she later moved to Rupertsburg where she established her own convert. This woman was considered to have been ‘”one of the most important figures in the history of the Middle Ages” and from this quote we can infer that her life was spent during the Medieval time in Germany around the 1100’s when there was a rise of great universities and the building of Chartres cathedral. She lived during the time of Eleanor of Aquitiaine who lived in western Europe in the high Middle Ages, along with Peter Abelard and Bernard of Clairvaux.

Disibodenberg. When she started her visions she was ordered by her confessor to write down the visions that she'd received since the age of three. Hildegard took ten years to write her book (Know the Ways). She wrote more than 300 letters to people who required her advice she also created short works on medicine and physiology. Hildegard's visions caused her to see humans as "living sparks" of God's love, coming from God. Between 1152 and 1162, Hildegard often preached in the Rhineland. Her monastery was placed under interdict because she had permitted the burial of a young man who had been excommunicated. She insisted that he had been reconciled with the Church and had received its sacraments before dying. In 2012, Hildegard was officially named a
