Hildegard of Bingen’s Scivias is a manuscript that is of importance because of its imagery in regards to mystical visions. One of the illustrations in Scivias depicts Hildegard in the midst of a vision, sketching what she is seeing onto a wax tablet. Although the manuscript’s illuminations were likely not completed by Hildegard’s hand, it is obvious she had a tremendous influence on them. Her vividly described and illustrated visions could likely have been caused by migraines, similar to the case of Julian of Norwich. The two women were both dealing with illnesses and considered their physical pain and symptoms as divine inspiration revealing itself. Hildegard believed her visions came to her because she was weak enough to be used as a vessel
