What does Himmelstoss do to get on good terms with Paul and his friends?

Mittelstaedt aslo gives Kantorek the position of squad leader during skirmishing to punish him. Tortuing Kantorek will make it easier for Mittelstaedt to return to the front line because he has gotten the revenge he deserved and he was able to show Kantorek that being on the front lines is not all that he made it out to
