The Birth and Cultural Influence of Hip-Hop Hip-hop, a cultural movement that emerged from the Bronx during the 1970s, continues to draw audiences from all over the world with its blends of music, art, and movement. Hip-hop was developed from the socioeconomic difficulties that underprivileged communities faced, which forced these communities to use their voices to feel heard and acknowledged by their communities to address the inequality, discrimination, and poor living conditions they faced (McCollum). Lastly, the fifth element of the hip-hop culture is the knowledge of self. This pillar stands as the fundamental pillar of hip-hop that represents the cultural and historical understanding and deep roots of hip-hop in the social, political, and economic struggles that these individuals and their communities faced. This pillar also represents change, advocacy, and empowerment for not only previous communities but for future communities and individuals to ensure they stay educated and hungry for change, for marginalized communities and groups to be the change and build bridges with one another to continue to empower one another. In conclusion, hip-hop, regardless of its heavy commercialization, remains a growing cultural movement that emerged from social, political, and economic hardships from disadvantaged communities in the Bronx in the 1970s. Despite the neglect, lack of resources, and racial prejudice, these groups used their artistic skills to share their stories and be the ones to create change for themselves and their communities.
