Abuse against women has been accepted and sometimes even encouraged throughout history. Starting from an early age, women are harassed and even tormented in many different ways, either from men or from other women. In ancient Rome, law gave a man life and death authority over his wife. In today’s time, though laws are usually not as extreme, many women are still mistreated and dismissed by society. There are many different types of abuses against women, and most on the list aren’t limited to only women. An endless list exists, some more damaging than others, yet also just as common as the more minor offenses.
Though the list of abuses against women is practically limitless, some common abuses inflicted upon women can be sorted into categories. The two categories are physical and emotion. Emotional abuse can be more common between a man and a women who know each other well, though it’s not limited to that situation. In the Middle Ages, women were often suspected of witchcraft, and were tortured before being burned, hanged, or drowned. In the English Common Law under the Rules of Marriage, men were advised not to just “rush at” their wives with insults or angry blows when they committed offenses; instead, they were told to “sharply scold” them, “bully and terrify” them.
