Imagine hitchhiking across the Americas and you get lost or hurt and you have nothing to do because you don’t know what to do. Waking around starving with no money to buy something to eat; or walking hurt and not knowing what to do to get back to your healthy stage. I am a border agent at the Mexican American crossing. I come across a lot of hitch hikers; and they all encounter some trouble. They either run out of food, get lost or get seriously hurt. This kid who called himself Alexander Supertramp wasn’t ready for a hitch hike. At many times, ”he was on the verge of starvation” – Krakauer 59. Second, buy a map of the place, so you won’t get lost and if a driver picks you up you can see if you’re getting closer to your destination. Learn how to be friendly. Have social skills because that will come in handy. Leave a good impression so people would say “Hey, I think I gave that guy a ride” (Krakauer 70.) Third, carry enough water and food to last you the time you’re going to be out for. Also have a sleeping space planned out, if you can’t stay somewhere then bring a sleeping bag, tent and a poncho. Fourth, hitch hiking may be illegal. It depends on the area and/or certain roads. You don’t want to have the police give you extra troubles so ask around a make sure that it’s legal or not. Not being prepared for the weather is horrible. It can affect you in many ways like Alexander Supertramp ”he had metabolized most of his body fat and was having difficulty staying warm during the long, cold nights” (Krakauer 58).
