One way that Flatland is similar to our society is the government being in complete control. In Flatland, the government could be considered a dictatorship. The Circles of Flatland seem to be in complete control. They imprison or kill anybody who is against them. They were waiting to take A. Square when he came back from Spaceland because they did not want him spreading the ideas. There are many times in history when dictatorship, or totalitarianism, was popular. Hitler is probably the most popular dictator. He is responsible for the mass slaughter of Jews.
