The meaning of life has always been a matter of perplexity, and a part of such perplexity stems from the word “meaning”. Often I would ask myself, “What is the meaning of ‘meaning’?” The word “meaning” is open to a plethora of interpretations: Some may refer it as the purpose or significance of life, while others the goods and the qualities which life brings forth. There isn’t a consensus as to what “meaning” should be defined as within this context. For the purposes of this reflection, I will explicitly maintain “meaning” as the purpose of life.
Then, what is the meaning of life? What makes one’s life meaningful? I would find myself pondering upon one of these questions every now and then, and yet, I never have managed to come up with a satisfying answer. The question in itself has a somewhat insatiable characteristic; that the answers one attempts to put forward are always, in a sense, incomplete.

Does it mean that not living a morally upright life deems one’s life meaningless? If that is the case, one should be able to claim Adolf Hitler’s life as meaningless. Yet, this claim might seem problematic— Hitler, who caused the Holocaust; who put six million Jews to death through hideous means; who terrorized and shocked most of the world, did in turn contribute to humanity’s progress. Nevertheless, these tragedies caused international protection of human rights to expand dramatically, and it certainly raised awareness for the matters of genocide. The consequences of Hitler’s life appear to entail some meaning after all. It is evident that living a moral life would definitely add meaning to life, though in itself, it does not fully compose life’s
