Introduction

When people feel that they have no control over their situation, they may also begin to behave in a helpless manner. This inaction can lead people to overlook opportunities for relief or change and cause them to become depressed.
The other cognitive explanation came from Beck who stated that depression was the result of how the individual perceives themselves, the world and their future. According to Dr Aaron Beck, negative thoughts, generated by dysfunctional beliefs are typically the primary cause of depressive symptoms. A direct relationship occurs between the amount and severity of someone's negative thoughts and the severity of their depressive symptoms. In other words, the more negative thoughts you experience, the more depressed you will become (Rashmi Nemade et al 2007).
I feel both of these theories relate to Rosa as she has no real control over her situation and living in hospital, Martin E. P Seligman states that this can make people behave in a helpless manner. And as Rosa also feels like an inconvenience to those around her she perceives herself in a negative way thus agreeing with the theories of Dr Aaron Beck.
