Hokusai’s mountains and seas Katsushika Hokusai was born in Edo (today’s Tokyo) and dedicated himself to art towards amounts of areas. For instance, he captured scenes varying from cityscapes to nature landscapes using watercolors and woodprints. In addition, Hokusai is one of the most well known Japanese artists in the world and the way he use non-Japanese styles to illustrate typical Japanese subjects makes his work widely spread all around the world. Furthermore, Hokusai’s artworks were influenced by traditional Japanese Kano School, the Chinese as well as Dutch landscape painting styles (Julyan H. E. Cartwright and Hisami Nakamura, 2009). As enlarging my thinking, it could be the defense towards international commercial shipping and trading at that time. , 2011). Furthermore, another color woodblock print called Rowing Boats in Waves at Oshioku from Hokusai that successfully used the unique waves in various combinations of mountains and seas. In this artwork, we can see there’s a boat suffering between the two pitches of two great waves. In other words, this situation may be happen in the real life, but also can be a fantasy view of the artist.
