Earthquakes are very consequential natural disasters that cause catastrophic damage to countries. They can leave nations with a million dollars in damage, and cause families to lose their loved ones and homes. Earthquakes are one of the most devastating natural disasters and could put governments and countries in shambles. Haiti is a prime example of this, and Haiti is already a poor nation. The 2010 earthquake caused millions of people to go into poverty and over 200,000 people died in the earthquake (Kent). My fiction excerpt led me to my research question because I wanted to know how Haiti was affected not just economically, but also how this devastating natural disaster affected Haiti politically. The earthquake caused people to go hungry and homeless. This caused there to be a limited selection of food and created food shortages all across the country of Haiti. “Hold Tight Don’t Let Go” is a story about a Haitian girl and her friend dealing with the effects of the earthquake. In the book, it says, “Engulfs, the House engulfs. Engulfs the entire city of Port-Au-Prince with a roar. (Wagner 2).” This shows the things people had to go through after the earthquake and how they were affected economically. In conclusion, all of the evidence above played major roles in how Haiti was affected by the limited resources it had. To know how Haiti's economic instability was affected, we have to look at the causes of it first. Going off of limited resources caused by the earthquakes, we now look at the economic instability and what happened to that. The Natural Disaster caused Haiti to lose a lot in property damage, and money. Haiti lost an estimated 9 billion 13 billion dollars
