Students in the present day need to improve in real-world applicable skills. Educational programs focus on meeting overall knowledge requirements and leave students with large gaps in day-to-day common knowledge that they expect parents and guardians to fill. Often these gaps still need to be filled. An epidemic of incompetence is infiltrating our younger generation. Schools should require a general and overarching life skills course in high school to prepare adolescents for adulthood. Young students often struggle with finances and practical domestic knowledge in general, and lack direction and confidence in their ability to meet the near future. Teaching students how to do different kinds of math, and science are just as crucial as teaching them concepts such as, “communication, personal decision making, time management, [and] realistic goal setting”(Major). The use of these skills is as necessary and applicable, if not more so, to anyone’s everyday life as algebra. Thus, pushing major day-to-day skills into the hands of parents and guardians who aren’t always present is irresponsible and will leave many students improperly prepared for their future. In an article titled “Why should we be teaching life skills in schools in 2024?” the author, a mindset coach, argues that life skills should be added to school curricula to combat the growing depression among young people and that more traditional subjects can be pushed to the wayside a bit to create a more healthy and productive generation. Often students find themselves confused and unprepared for the future which is why life skills classes should be implemented in high schools. Lacking financial knowledge is a common trait among
