Have you ever read Holes or Small Steps both by Louis Sachar? Genre is the category a book is written in, mood is how the reader feels about the story. There is many similarities and differences in these two stories like the genre and mood. One similarity between Small Steps and Holes is the genre. Both stories genre is realistic fiction a lot of things could be real but are not. An example is found on page fifty five “I was supposed to meet the dude in the parking lot of the H-E-B at five fifteen. This shows that the story could be real but is not because they are meeting someone at a place that could be real but is not. Compared to Holes a lot of things also could be real but are not. In Small Steps Armpit is being arrested for having fake tickets. Ginny starts to have a seizure and they insist that Armpit is on drugs and gave some to Ginny. This creates a mood of distraught. For example on page one hundred and four to page one hundred and five “They quickly tackled him again, and then the billy club slammed against the side of his neck.” Another is also found on page one hundred and five “Stay back mayor, he’s all whacked out on something.” This shows that the mood is distraught because everyone is against Armpit and won’t let him help Ginny. In difference, in Holes Stanley hijacks Mr.Sir’s truck and wrecks it into a hole. This creates a mood of of frantic. For example on page one hundred and twenty four “Mr.Sir came running around to the other side of the truck. The door was still open. “put it in gear!” shouted Twitch. This shows that everyone is yelling and running frantically trying to stop and help Stanley. In conclusion both settings in Holes and Small Steps create a different
