Holland Code Assignment: Lucille Ball
The following events contributed to the tremendous success of a woman idolized by many, Lucille Désirée Ball. From an early age, it was evident that Lucy had an interest in dramatic arts when she convinced her mother to enroll her in a drama school in New York, at age 15. Unfortunately, these efforts seemed wasted when the school wrote her mother saying that Lucy was too quiet and shy, as well as a waste of time to the school. Ironically, Lucy continued on her path of perseverance and moved to Hollywood in the early 1930’s to pursue an acting career. This granted her a few small film roles, as well as meeting her first husband, Desi Arnaz on the set of the film “Dance, Girl, Dance.” In the hopes of receiving the star roles she fiercely desired, Lucy dyed her hair the soon to be “signature red” she was known for, at the demand of MGM. Thanks to her husband at the time, Desi Arnaz, she was encouraged to pursue broadcasting and finally landed a leading role on the radio show, “My Favourite Husband.” The success of the radio show opened further opportunities for Lucy, eventually leading to the date of October 15th, 1951 on which the first episode of Lucy’s most successful career project “I Love Lucy” debuted on television.
