Agnes is a 37 years old female emigrant from Cuba, who came by boat to Miami when she was 22 years old with a group of other escapees. She had only 20 dollars in her pocket when she arrived and did not speak any English. Agnes did not have any place to go in the area. Agnes had a tough time settling down in the US. During her first month in Miami she had to sleep on the beach. However, every morning she would walk to the local Home Depo parking lot and offered her cleaning services to Home Depo shoppers. Soon, a store manager Seth have noticed this young and attractive lady. He invited her for a cup of Cuban coffee and suggested to her to apply for a job at Home Depo. Seth began to drink and every evening he would come home after work drunk. Seth's behavior become inappropriate: he called Agnes bad names, yelled and humiliated her, he told her that she was a stupid emigrant and without him she would still be on the street earning her money is a prostitute. The husband developed a strong drinking habit, lost his job at Home Depo and became involved in drug dealing. The fights between spouses become regular. Agnes was afraid to repot Seth because she had a little child and she was afraid that Seth would injure her permanently. She still had some level of safety - Seth provided money by selling drugs on the street. Finally, Seth got arrested and went to prison. Agnes has divorced her husband and has been in therapy for the domestic violence for the past year. Currently, Seth is in prison and Agnes wants to help her 12-year old daughter, Pat, move past the domestic violence she witnessed and prevent any behavioral and/or emotional repercussions.
