From hiding behind my parents in my single-digit years, to crying during a speech freshman year, I have never been a confident or outspoken person. The struggle of being social has always been present for me. Those, you might guess, would not be the characteristics of a senior homecoming queen. Yet, I have the crown as proof, sitting ten feet away from me as I write this essay. Almost every girl, at one point in her life, desires to be crowned as homecoming queen. Despite that, the desire within me lessened as the time for voting grew nearer. Not only would all the attention be on the winner of the crown, but the homecoming queen usually has a reputation for being popular, which is something that I never strive for. As much as I knew it would be an honor, the thought of it truly happening was frightening. Ironically, I obtained the crown and it was significantly more simple than I would have guessed. Therefore, being shy and secluded takes away from your ability to take part in community. Through newfound friendships, you learn to grow together and trust one another. Also, when you take time to habituate yourself with others, you learn how each soul you come across is worthy of being loved. In a way, I have found the shyness is somewhat associated with selfishness, in the sense that you are denying others love on account of your own fear. Popularity is a position you should never strive for. I have learned that instead, it is necessary to focus on building attributes such as being kind and loving. Whether popularity follows behind or not doesn’t matter. Through becoming homecoming queen and being described as “popular”, I have come to the conclusion that popularity is insignificant, but being kind and creating meaningful friendships will last a lifetime.
