Homo neanderthalensis also known as Neanderthals were the first specimens to be acknowledged as an early human fossil. Discovered in 1856, German scientists had never seen a specimen quite like it. The specimen was found by Geologist William King and was the first fossil hominid species to be named. William King suggested the name Homo neanderthalensis after the site fossils were discovered. (the Feldhofer Cave of the Neander Valley). Geologist discovered several years after the first Neanderthal was discovered that fossils from Engis, Belgium, Gibraltar, Quarry and Forbes were also Neanderthals.
The Neanderthals are the closest extinct human species to modern humans, therefore having similar body structure of people today. The defining facial features of Neanderthals including the center of the face, sharp cheekbones, and a large nose. Male neanderthals were an average of 5ft 5in (164 cm) while females were only slightly shorter on an average of 5 ft 1 in (155 cm). Their arms were thick, along with the rest of their body making them a very strong and compact species. Built heavier than most modern humans, they were able to withstand the cold climates during the ice age. While males were normally heavier and taller than the females sexual dimorphism wasn't uncommon.
