Thesis:
In “Hop Frog,” the king’s power gave him the ability to mistreat Hop-Frog, and this abuse of power ultimately lead to his downfall.
Body Paragraph 1: The king in “Hop-Frog” had power, not only over an entire kingdom, but over his “fool” as well. This fool went by the name of Hop-Frog, which “was not the name given to the dwarf by his sponsors at baptism, but it was conferred upon him, by general consent, of the seven ministers, on account of his inability to walk as other men do” (Poe). Hop-Frog is a cripple, unable to use his legs like a regular person would. For him to be saddled with a name such as Hop-Frog is highly offensive. He is not treated like a human being, and was viciously looked down upon by the king and his ministers. When something as personal and significant as a name is taken away, and replaced with a degrading nickname for the sole purpose of humour, it fuels an anger in Hop-Frog that makes him want to take revenge against his perpetrators.

After all, complete freedom and no restraints seems to be what the majority of people strive for. This scenario is already a reality for some lucky souls. These people are powerful, influential, rich and most likely involved in politics. But these mighty public figures may get too carried away with the influence they hold, and they become greedy and abusive. This evil born from the power in their hands will lead to their downfall and destruction. Such was the case in Edgar Allan Poe’s “Hop-Frog,” were the king abused his position of influence over Hop-Frog, angering the crippled, captive dwarf enough for him to seek out revenge on the king and his seven fellow ministers. Had the king not have treated Hop-Frog in such a manner, perhaps he would have lived to see another
