Many of you might recognise these horses behind me. The discussion surrounding the ethics of horse racing is raging across Australia following the death of two horses who competed in the Melbourne Cup in Nov 2015. Shortly after the race last year, favourite horse Admire Rakti collapsed and died in the stalls while fellow race horse Araldo broke his leg on a fence after being scared by a spectator waving a flag. Araldo was was taken to the University of Melbourne Veterinary Hospital for surgery, but sadly they were unable to mend his fractures and he was put down. The RSPCA has spoken out about the loss of the two horses, calling it a timely reminder regarding the cruelty of the sport. Horse racing is a cruel sport that has been a tradition in Australia since the first fleet arrived from England in 1788. The first Melbourne cup followed shortly after in 1877. It involves a number of horses with jockeys on their back running at full pace around a track to be the first across the Finish line. Firstly, injuries to horses occur on track that often lead to the horse being put down. In addition, horse racing is unfair and cruel to horses as they are killed on mass and not treated with care. Furthermore, the racing industry is more interested in the profit they make rather than the welfare of there horses. What other sport requires so much killing and death, How many more horses have to die before we stop the seemingly endless killing of these sensitive intelligent
