“Hosea’s experience with the faithless prostitute Gomer directly paralleled Yahweh’s relationship with a people who left their God to play the harlot with Baal” (HW 591). This quote from Hill and Walton (HW) explicitly highlights the relevance of Hosea’s marriage with Gomer to that of Israel’s harlotry with God. The message is clear; God wanted His prophet Hosea to experience in the natural what God felt in the spiritual concerning Israel. It is also interesting to note that Gomer continued playing the harlot even after the birth of her three children to Hosea (Hosea 2:5). At this point, it is safe to say that Hosea would have been content in letting Gomer go chase after her other lovers, but God intervened. HW stated that, “Hebrew’s coexistence with the Canaanite to include their religious syncretism and compromise, inevitably led to the intermarriage and worship of the Canaanite gods” (HW 589). If you fast-forward today, we now have the symbol “coexist,” which in part represents the equality of all religion and further reaffirms the notion that Jesus is not the only way to God. James 4:4-5 said it best concerning today’s church, “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, the spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?” (KJV). This scripture is precisely accurate because as one can observe, there is no difference between the church and the world today.
