Did you know that 324,000 African Americans have been killed in the past 35 years. Many people back in the 1950’s were very racist. They believed that African Americans were less than them because of their skin color. Most people nowadays are against racism, but many are still racist. Some people tried to help African Americans back in the 1950’s. For example, in the ‘Mississippi Trial, 1955’, one of the characters was against racism but could not really do anything about it. His name was Hiram Hillburn. In the film ‘The Help’ a character named Skeeter helped the African Americans get atleast some rights that they deserved. The following paragraphs will be about two different characters that are against racism from two different stories trying to help African Americans get the rights that they deserve.
Hiram Hillburn from the novel ‘The Mississippi Trial, 1955’ by Christopher E. Crowe, is a 16 year old teenager from Mississippi who moves away to Arizona. He had lived with his grandfather in Mississippi for 8 years. When he was eight his parents told him that they would have to move away to Arizona. Hiram did not really help out, but he was willing to testify in court to tell the truth about who he thinks killed Emmett. Skeeter helps out in a way no one imagined she would. She really made people think differently about African Americans. She was able to publish her book named ‘The Help’, and because of that, everyone had a different view on Hilly Holbrook, and how she was making everyone treat African Americans horrible.
