How Carlie Caoua Changed My Life

Over the past 10 years being hidden behind a shadow has given me the opportunity to shine even brighter now and self doubt in the long run has given me a greater sense of confidence. But most importantly I have gone from being known as “Mrs. Caoua’s daughter” to “Carlie Caoua”. Now you might be wondering why these changes are important or how they were able to occur in such a short time. But the truth is, gaining these things wasn’t easy!! It all came down to letting go of my insecurities, knowing who I am in the present, and who I want to be in the future. Now let's start from the beginning! I, Carlie Caoua went to South Lakewood Elementary in Lakewood, Colorado. I started school in kindergarten like any other six year old would. But what was different is that’s also the year my mom started school. My mom, Mrs. Caoua started to work at MY school that same year. In kindergarten I was young and a Mommies Girl so having my mom at school was great, I never had to be separated from her!! The first major mental change can be seen around the ages of seven or eight. During these ages kids start to realize gender roles. Gender roles will affect friendships and in many cases end them like mine did. Boys are no longer able to openly play with girls without it being labeled as a crush. Social classes change also, children who come from less fortunate families will be recognized and friends for them will become scarce. Beside gender and social roles, interests and hobbies become a major factor. Many times I was labeled as a “goodie goodie” due to the fact that Mrs. Caoua worked at my school. Also more times than I can count I was labeled as “Mrs. Caoua’s Daughter” and nothing more. Now this might not have been so bad if it wasn’t the bullies main attack
