The Carolingian line, established by Pepin of Heristal, rose to power as the Merovingians disappeared. Charles Martel combined his control over the Franks after his annihilation of the Muslims at Tours (AD 732).1 In 751, his son Pepin the Short was delegated King of the Franks. In 768, Charlemagne obtained the throne, and on Christmas day in the year 800, Charlemagne was crowned emperor. 1 Before Charlemagne’s conversion to Christianity, his world had been a pagan one, with numerous warring tribes or kingdoms, and Charlemagne had conquered a considerable amount of these tribes. Cantor (1994) writes of Charlemagne’s great contribution to Europe’s welfare and that he was the greatest king in Europe. Having been delegated
