Dmitri Shostakovich was a child of the revolution. When the composer-to-be was born in St. Petersburg in 1907, his engineer father and his quiet, yet musically inclined mother had inklings of the coming upheaval . This looming turmoil may have been hard to grasp for this geographically Russian but ethnically Polish couple .
