Dr. Benjamin E. Mays was an African-American minister and Civil Rights activist who helped shape America into what it is today. His contributions influenced African-American, Martin Luther King Jr.'s way of thinking which led him in turn to become a major Civil Rights leader. Born on August 1st, 1894 in Ninety-Six, South Carolina, Mays faced discrimination. During this time, Jim Crow laws were enforced to limit the rights of African Americans. Growing up, he was the youngest in his family. His parents had eight children, growing up in a Christian household. During his youth, he was a hardworking person.
