At 15 he moved to Canberra Grammar School to further ground the classics, so he studied Ancient Greek. He then three times sat the leaving certificate between 1932-1934. Gough enrolled for the University of Sydney in 1935 where he studied law and arts. In 1941 he joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) during World War II and in 1947 he practised worked as a barrister and appointed the Queen’s Counsel in 1950.
