Nowadays you can find a wide selection of books with a similar plot to that of Cinderella . The oldest story that is like that of Cinderella is dated back to the Chinese ninth century. So this story has been around for a long time as it seems. Most, if not all, of these stories include something that is lost, a big gathering, a stepmother, a dead mother, an absent father, two stepsisters, and a little bit of magic. They usually use the same setting. There is a young girl ( or even a boy) who is poor that, in the end, becomes royalty. One fairy tale that is similar to Cinderella in a way, is Rumpelstiltskin. They all intend for a happy ending, and punishing evil. In Cinderella, she married a prince and got a happily ever after ending. If you look at the fairy tale Rumplestiltskin, evil was punished, and the daughter of the poor man had gotten married to the king and was able to keep her daughter. When looking at Rapunzel, there is a girl searching for freedom and she finally finds it when she meets a prince. She then becomes royalty. Sound familiar? The last fairy tale that we see this in is Aladdin. Except the gender roles are different. The “Cinderella” like character is Aladdin, who is a boy.
