The Underground Railroad was a secret network in the 19th century that helped enslaved African Americans escape to freedom in free states and Canada, it was a path that went through free states and into Canada so they could have normal lives.

There were pathways through peoples safe houses, and there were many people that helped these people to get to Canada, like a black woman named Harriet Tubman.

Harriet Tubman was kind of like a superhero to the enslaved people of the Underground Railroad. She led enslaved people to free states and Canada. She did this risking her life, but she didn't care, she went back 19 times and helped over 300 people gain freedom. She knew where to go through the routes and not get caught. The people she helped
