He had twenty men, four being his own sons. (Horwitz, p.45) He led them against the Pro-Slavery Missourians that tried to takeover free-state of Lawrence, Kansas. They then created Pottawatomie Rifles, went to fight against the threat that was created by Alabama major Jefferson Buford on Lawrence in April 1856. They were to late though, the city was looted and burned. Since the city was burned down Brown was furious and decided something needed to be done. Out of the men part of Pottawatomie Rifles, he recruited two men plus four of his sons and a son-in-law for the killings at Pottawatomie creek, murders of five men who were proslavery settlers. Brown decide it was time to take this war to “Africa.” Africa was Browns name for slaveholding South. He started to recruit than when decided he was going after the U.S armory at Harper’s Ferry in Virginia. He had nine recruits from his trip to Tabor in 1857.
