How Did John Calvin Influence Church History

This week, I have been charged to write an essay on what influence did John Calvin have on church history. As I reflect on my reading, two things really stand out to me about his influence on church history. First, his leadership and commitment to what he believed helped to birth Calvinistic Christianity. Secondly, Calvin helped define what disciplined practices a church should follow, thus making it fundamentally sound. From reading the textbook, “Church History in Plain Language” by Bruce L. Shelley, I was able to take a small peek into the life of John Wesley (1509-1564). He was a Frenchman, a scholar who was described as a bit antisocial and shy. He also enjoyed peace and sequestration. He was found to be quite devoted to advancing the cause of Christ. His leadership ability was recognized by another reformer, William Farel, who approached Calvin about leading the charge to reshape the institutions in Geneva along biblical lines. Calvin declined the invitation advising that he had other plans, and when chastised by Farel that he would be punished for putting his plans above those of God, Calvin changed his mind, as he was then compelled not to place his (Calvin’s) personal desires, before the desires of God for his life. …show more content…
Noted theologian Charles Spurgeon said this about influence, “I believe that one reason why the church of God at this present moment has so little influence over the world is because the world has so much influence over the church (Christian Quotes).” Influence is defined as, “The capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of others (Dictionary.com).” In this respect, the desire to operate in God’s will had a great influence on John Calvin.
