Finally, on March 12, 1912, the first Girl Guide meeting in America was held. Juliette had invited all the girls from her cousin’s boarding school to the first meeting (Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Museum). At the meeting, Juliette showed them the books, badges, and uniforms the English girls used. All of the girls begged her to start a troop. Juliette then started the first Girl Guide troop in America. The first troop had 17 girls, but little did Juliette know, it would grow a lot more (Kudlinski, 42). At every meeting, Juliette fed the girls a healthy snack and taught them new skills. The most unbelievable skill though was how to play basketball. During the meetings, the girls would wear pants with a skirt over top, and go out and play basketball. Before they could play though, they put a canvas covering all around the court so that they could take off their skirts and play in pants. This was unheard of because at that time girls were not supposed to show their legs, so by doing this, Juliette opened up opportunities that the girls never would have gotten otherwise (Kudlinski, 43).
