Julius Caesar was a great Roman General and leader. Caesar was born to Gaius and Aurelia Caesar, who were rumored to be descended from the Trojan prince, Aeneas. Throughout his life, Caesar made a huge impact on Rome, from reforming the government, to relieving debt. Caesar began studying politics after the death of Sulla. He became consul and eventually became dictator for life. Julius Caesar is famous for his deeds in Ancient Rome.
In 59 BC, Caesar was elected consul, an important government position. There are two consuls elected each year in ancient Rome. After being elected consul, Caesar allied with Pompey and Marcus Licinius Crassus. This was the first triumvirate. A triumvirate is when three powerful people control an area. Following Crassus’s death in Syria in 53 BC, Pompey becomes jealous of Caesar and his power. Caesar goes to war against Pompey and proves his leadership by leading his army through the Rubicon on January 10-11, 49 BC. In 48 BC, Caesar drives Pompey and his forces out of Italy and chases Pompey to Egypt. Pompey is killed by King Ptolemy’s officer in Egypt. Caesar and Cleopatra meet, and have a son together. Even though he only served one year before being assassinated, he would make a great impact on Rome in that short period of time. Julius Caesar decreased Rome’s debt, reorganized the Roman calendar, reconstructed two city-states, Carthage and Corinth, which were destroyed by the rulers before. Caesar also constructed many more buildings in the city. He built more law courts, central plazas, a temple to Mars, a new Senate house, and a theatre. During his rule in Rome, Julius Caesar was able to accomplish many things.
