Life Span: She was hailed from Nantucket, Massachusetts growing up as one of ten children in a Quaker family. In their religion Maria and her sisters received a high-quality education. In their family she received the same rights as boys or men did during that time. Her parents wanted all their children to get a good education, even their girls which was unusual during that time.

It was very extraordinary, considering the roles women “played” during that time, when Maria Mitchell became America’s first woman astronomer and the first woman to join the American Academy of Arts and Science.
These achievements paved many women’s lives that followed after her. Her endeavors encouraged generations of people to explore the Universe and stand up for what is right, no matter what obstacles are in the way.
People connect to Maria Mitchell and her love of science and the natural world. Her influence on science and her gold medal from the King of Denmark instilled some strong values mostly in women and they developed to be more confident.
She developed as an accomplished astronomer in the male dominated world of science.
Maria Mitchell was open and vocal about her opinions. She refused to wear cotton in protest against slavery and supported women’s right to vote. She did a lot for women’s rights and therefore helped to found the Association for the Advancement of Women and served as its president.
