The Native American Indians and the Spanish conquistadors greatly influenced each other in many ways. The Spanish were aggressive and wanted all the power which lead to mistreatment of the Native American Indians. The Natives were more peaceful than the Spanish and didn’t want anything to do with them. They just wanted to stay in their territory and live life like they always have been. When the Spanish first arrived in America. They immediately started enslaving the Natives. When the Spanish government heard about this they told the explorers to teach the Native Americans Spanish and convert them to Christianity, and that they should be treated like any Spaniard. When this message reached the explorers in America the Spanish didn’t want to give up their slaves. The enslavement of the Native Americans lead to tension between the Natives and the Spanish. Some of the Spanish priests were appalled by this treatment of the Natives and wanted it to stop. So they created the New Law and sent it to Spain. The New Law stated that the Indians were to be transferred to villages that are under surveillance, that they should work for the Spaniards no more than 9 months a year, and that they are to be free. Some of the Indians wanted to get rid of Spanish influence all together. A man named Pope was planning a rebellion against the Spanish in Santa Fe. In 1680 Pope’s force attacked. They surrounded Santa Fe and forced all the Spaniards in Santa Fe to retreat out of the city. Pope ordered all churches and Spanish building to be destroyed. 12 years later in 1692 the Spanish recaptured Santa Fe.
