McKinley was born on January 29, 1843 in Niles, Ohio. He had 5 sisters and 3 brothers and two parents named James S. McKinley and Mary (Polly) Rose. McKinley went to college but had to drop out and become a teacher at the local school because his family didn't have much money. Later he went to a law school because he became interested in politics. One event that shaped McKinley´s personality was when he was only 18 years old and was under command of Rutherford B. Hayes. Hayes was soon to be the president one day too, after roosevelt. Before becoming president McKinley was first a teacher, lawyer, and then a member of the U.S House of Representatives for 14 years along with Another career he had as the governor of Ohio. One important event that happened while McKinley was president had to be when The Spanish-American War was started and quickly finished with a single american dead. Some other ones were annexing the Hawaiian Islands and the building of the Panama Canal.
