How did slaves affect the daily Roman economy?

Slavery was the cornerstone of the Rome’s economy and the social fabric of the society. (Urv.com n.d). As the Roman conquered Greek, Sicily and Western Europe, millions of slaves were shipped to Rome, Italian province and Latin colonies; it was the Roman mode of proving her dominance on the world and the conquered city-states. (Urv.com n.d).

Slavery was widespread throughout the Ancient Roman household but the greatest effect was found on plantation and farms. The conquest of Macedonia, Carthage, and Greece altered the flowery time of the Roman Empire, the luxuries of the elite and the ruling class which was a driving factor of the socioeconomic policies of the Republic was affected. The influx of slavery during this period was considered a sign of power but this contributed immensely to the fall of the already fragile Roman ruling class. Agricultural farmland that were originally run by business families were replaced by slaves run plantation owned by the wealthy Aristocrats. (Urv.com n.d).

This contributed to destabilizing the social class and ultimately contributing to the fall of the Republic. The power struggle between the senatorial elite (optimates) and the reformers (populares) grew, the public revolted due to unemployment, landless and the citizen mob were a great obstacle to the ability of the Senate to govern the Republic.
