In the 19th century, China, was a country in decline. The ruling Manchu emperors were resented and unpopularity rose when British dominance could not be held back. Great Britain wanted to trade with the Chinese but were met with resistance. The illegal export of opium into China had resulted in widespread addiction causing serious economic and social trouble. The first Opium War (1839-1842) ensued and Great Britain defeated China. They established a treaty to open more ports to foreign trade. This helped shape Chinese immigration and made Westerners immune to Chinese law. By July, 1844 the United States and China sign the Treaty of Wang Hiya and gained many more concessions.
