The Boer War, aka the Second Boer War, the Anglo-Boer War or South African War, was a significant part of Canadian history as it was Canada’s first foreign, international war. The War lasted from 1899-1902 and it was between the British and two independent Afrikaner (Boer) republics. The Republics were the Afrikaner republic of Transvaal and the Orange Free State, both were of protestant Dutch, French and German refugee descent which arrived in the Cape of Good Hope in Southern Africa in the 17th century. Britain took over the Cape in the 19th century as they already had two South African colonies (Cape & Natal). In 1899, they also wanted the border areas because of Transvaal’s rich gold fields.
