There was a time when slaves were legal, but all this stopped when the Civil War came. There were two sides, the Confederates and the Union. Ulysses S. Grant was a general who fought for the Union in the Civil War. He was fighting for the side who didn’t want slaves. The great Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses at Appomattox. If it was Ulysses S. Grant who surrendered to Robert E. Lee, we would be one step closer to losing the war, meaning us, having slaves and that isn’t fair to African Americans. Ulysses S.
