Vikings were groups of Germanic tribes living in far northern Europe. They were fierce warriors, skilled sailors, and polytheistic like other pre-Christian Germans. They sailed in narrow longboats to exploring for new trade routes and places to plunder. Throughout the Middle Ages, Vikings sailed south and west and attacked – or sometimes settled into – European lands. Their boats were fast and small, allowing them to attack inland places with little warning. Vikings also had a large and important impact on the feudal order in Europe.
