Andrew Jackson, elected by popular vote, became the seventh president of the United States. He strived to act as the direct representative of the common man and no one can contest the results of his presidency. However, his choices and actions in many situations throughout his presidency and his life prove to question his integrity. Whether it be his terrible temper or his belief in white power, it’s hard to overlook the countless number of deaths due to his villainous behavior.
In November, 1814, Jackson as major-general of the U.S. Army was attempting to remove the potential threat from an invasion by the British and without authorization attacked the Spanish territory of Florida. In 1817, he returned to Florida and again without executive orders captured St. Mark’s and Pensacola again for the second time. He engaged in many brawls, and even killed a few men in duels. He believed government duties could be so plain and simple that he tried to democratize federal office holding by rotating positions among deserving applicants. It actually increased nepotism and gave jobs to political supporters. This was known as the “spoils system.” (Biography.com)
Jackson was firmly opposed to the existence of a national bank. The Second Bank of the United States, a corporation chartered by Congress, provided the nation with its paper currency and managed the finances of the federal government. He believed that a national bank was unconstitutional. He therefore transferred the deposits of the federal government to banks which were chartered by the states causing financial panic and an economic depression. This economic crisis lasted well past his
