Imagine if you were told to give a speech unexpectedly. You stand up in front of your peers and all of a sudden you can’t breath. Your heart rate is speeding up and up you are frozen by fear. What is happening? Anxiety has become a major problem in teens across the U.S. “Anxiety has been on the rise among children and young adults since at least the 1950s” (Dwyer). “About 8 percent of today’s U.S. teens suffer from some type of diagnosed anxiety disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health” (Anxiety Disorders in Teens). This is a problem because it is causing students to become more stressful and are too busy learning how to cope with it that they are missing out on class. “Anxiety disorders describe a group of mental issues that cause people to be “on edge” and high-strung, to the point where it interferes with their day-to-day operations” (Anxiety Disorders in Teens). “They’re the most common form of mental illness in the United States, affecting 18% of the population. Lagging behind this are mood orders like depression (9.5%), personality disorders (9%) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD (4%)” (Anxiety Disorders in Teens). Also, the levels of panic attacks will rise, and the number of missed classes will rise, and their grades will decrease. Is this what America needs? Do we really need teens cutting themselves because someone said that they looked fat? The fact that people aren’t as aware as they need to be about teens with anxiety is sad. How many more teens’ need to die before people realized that anxiety and depression is a serious issue? Even though there are non profit organizations to help the teens and help others learn about anxiety illnesses, they need to get help with spreading the information.
