Racism in The Crucible and its Reflection on Modern Society Racism can be found in all aspects of life including the government, the media, the workplace, etc. Sometimes it is obvious, and sometimes it is casual. In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the people of Salem are not often outright racist, but Tituba, the only non-white character, is enslaved, and mistreated by her owners, and it is clear that she is an outcast in the town because of her race. When Abigail accuses Tituba of working with the devil to get herself out of trouble, the ensuing chaos from that accusation reflects modern racism by exposing how racial bias leads to the systemic oppression of marginalized people in society. The officers did not stop to question Floyd before arresting him because they had one tip that might suggest someone in the area committed a crime, and their racial biases made them think that since he was there, and since he was black, he was the one who did it. Incidents such as George Floyd’s death expose the injustices marginalized people face daily and help us challenge racist ideals and hopefully, one day, remove them from our society. George Floyd’s death is a significant example of modern racism, but it was not a unique incident. Others such as Breonna Taylor and Freddie Gray lost their lives in similar instances of police brutality. Racial bias, particularly towards black people, is deeply rooted within many of America’s police officers. Racial bias within America’s law enforcement not only causes many unnecessary deaths and injuries, it can also lead to an increase in untreated mental health issues among those who have been victims of police
