In George Orwell’s 1984, the government controls the population of Oceania by stripping them of their individuality. The Party uses alienation to make their citizens conform. When a person's free will is taken they lose their ability to form opinions and alienating them is the most effective way of suppressing a large population. Newspeak, the language adopted by Oceania, takes away citizens ability to express thoughts of negativity to the Party or rebellion. Syme explains the concept of Newspeak best when he obliviously states, “.. the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible…” (Orwell 52). If there are no words to express the way you feel about something there’s no
