Homer uses figurative language to show many themes displayed in the Odyssey. The use of figurative language helps portray the themes he is trying to show through an element other people would understand. And also, to help the reader picture how Homer was trying to merge theme while they are reading to picture the scenery along the journey of Odysseus to the “Land of the Dead” and back to Ithaca.

They put their ship and stayed in a cave during the storm. Before their travels, Odysseus was warned not to eat the cattle or dreadful thing will happen, and that there is going to be a storm. When the dawn rose on them, they created a fire and Odysseus told his crew “Don’t eat the cattle. We have enough food.” And as long as the bread and red wine kept the men up, they promised not to touch the cattle. So a few days passed, and they ran out of bread and red wine. Odysseus and his crew were growing hungry. But, they still can’t touch the cattle. The next day, Odysseus went to a sheltered part of the island and washed his hands. He made a supplication to the Gods. But to his luck, he fell asleep. His crew was starving, but they knew not to touch the cattle or damaging things will happen to them. But, their starvation overcame them and they went to go hunt for the noblest of the cattle. When they found one, they slaughtered it. Tore limbs off, scrapped fat off of it and roasted the meat over the fire they had built in the nimblelest of the morning. When Odysseus woke up, he detected burning fat.
