What does one think of when one hears the word revenge? Well Montresor thought of it as death in the story of the “The Cast of Amontillado.” Written by Edgar Allan Poe which is a great story about how Montresor sets out to seek revenge on Fortunato during the carnival. He seeks this revenge by bringing him in to his catacombs for what Fortunato thinks is going to be a wine tasting, but too drunk to realize that he is being brought to his death. Montresor has been planning for a very long time by bringing him into the catacombs and chains Fortunato to a granite wall were he gets buried alive were he successfully gets his revenge.
The first characteristic is his want for revenge because of what Fortunato had done to him in the past. Revenge doesn’t come easy it takes time and that’s what Montresor did, he planned out is revenge for a very long time. “THE thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (Poe 1). He was making Fortunato think that they were friends when they were going down into the catacombs for example, when Fortunato had his cough trying to make him go back up acting like he cared about his health. “Come I say, with decision, we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back; you will be ill and I cannot be responsible. Besides, there is Luchesi” (Poe 2). There is also a lot of Sarcasim about how he said I cannot be responsible when he will actually be responsible for his death. “Enough, he said; the cough is mere nothing it will not kill me.
