How Does Pilgrims Make Their Journeys?

Pilgrims make journeys for many reasons. Some are searching for spiritual or physical healing. While others are attempting to earn a better life when they are reincarnated. Pilgrims make these journeys and perform acts of devotion by scaling mountains, or make journeys barefoot.
There is a subterranean sanctuary located in the small town of Bom Jesus Da Lapa in Brazil. The inside of the cave features odd limestone formations. There is a legend that a young Portuguese philanderer, Franciso de Mendonca Mar, left Salvador and wandered for many months before discovering the cave and also his faith. In the cave, he prayed, repented, and lived the life of a hermit. His devotedness to his faith soon spread and rural Brazilians and incoming silver miners who were in the region. He soon became to be known as a miracle worker. After his death in 1722 the cave became the focus of devotion. Pilgrims now make their way to the cave either by foot or truck to ask for intervention, to pray, and to give thanks (Bellows,238).

The journey itself is not terrible, but the way the pilgrim makes the journey in order to prove their devotion. Some walk the last few miles barefoot, while others crawl carrying candles that have burned to almost nothing. Others lay on their backs while carrying replicas of churches on their chest, and inch their way to the sanctuary. People line the streets to watch the pilgrims suffer in their journey. The shrine is actually the third to stand in its spot. In 1913, the shrine was reconstructed after an earthquake. The shrine is small and can not hold many people at once
