In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, while both John Proctor and Abigail demonstrate acts of self-sacrifice, their methods and motivations highlight the differences in their character, ultimately revealing the contrast between the two characters and their moral integrity. Both characters express self-sacrifice but with two different motives. John Proctor understands how deep and wrong the issue actually is and decides to step forward, speaking for the justice of the falsely accused people. Similarly, Abigail realizes the effect the false accusations are having on the city of Salem but rather than trying to create peace, Abigail begins a mass hysteria to support her personal gain, to create a distraction and to satisfy her revengeful ambition.
